Instrumentation Valve Engineer
Profile Instrumentation Valve Engineer
Do you have experience selecting and specifying mission-critical valves that keep offshore systems safe and reliable? Can you troubleshoot complex valve issues in both new-build and brownfield environments?
-
We are looking for an Instrument Valve Engineer to specify, evaluate, and ensure the design and integration of control, safety, and relief valves while balancing cost, quality, and compliance for offshore projects.
-
Tasks & responsibilities:
- Evaluate cost, constructability, operability, and maintainability when specifying valve solutions.
- Prepare detailed specifications for control valve, on/off valve, and pressure relief valve packages in line with corporate technical standards and client requirements.
- Act as Package Engineer for valve packages, collaborating with Package Managers and Buyers to perform technical bid evaluations.
- Mentor and coach junior valve engineers across multiple locations on valve selection and specification best practices.
- Review vendor documentation and support factory acceptance tests (FAT) to verify compliance with project requirements.
- Advise material and corrosion engineers on optimal valve body and trim materials to balance cost, quality, and delivery schedules.
- Challenge vendor-proposed control valve solutions regarding size, material selection, and valve type to ensure fit-for-purpose designs.
- Specify appropriate actuator types and pneumatic or hydraulic control schemes, including partial-stroke test functionality where required.
- Define positioner diagnostic requirements to integrate valve health data with the ICSS valve asset monitoring system.
- Translate functional safety requirements from the Safety Requirements Specification into on/off valve datasheets and control valve designs.
- Review valve specifications prepared by engineering subcontractors to ensure alignment with corporate standards and consistency in quality.
- Verify that all selected valves comply with applicable regulations, classification society rules, and internal technical standards.
- Assist Supply Chain Category Managers in qualifying and pre-screening new valve vendors based on technical criteria.
- Contribute to the development and revision of corporate engineering and technical guidelines for valve package preparation, evaluation, and testing.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting advice to operations teams addressing valve performance issues in the field.
- Support brownfield projects by reviewing existing installations, specifying retrofit valve solutions, and ensuring ongoing reliability.
- Develop project-specific performance standards for valve packages based on corporate technical standards and client inputs.
Requirements Instrumentation Valve Engineer
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Instrumentation, or related field) from an accredited institution.
- At least 8 years' experience in instrumentation valve engineering within upstream oil & gas projects (FEED, basic, and detailed engineering).
- Thorough knowledge of API 6A and API 6D standards, including performance requirements and ISO actuator specifications.
- In-depth understanding of API and ASME BPVC requirements for pressure relief devices (safety valves and rupture discs).
- Solid familiarity with control valve fundamentals and relevant ISO and IEC standards (e.g., IEC 61508, IEC 61511).
- Proven experience performing control valve sizing and performance calculations (preferably using CONVAL or equivalent software).
- Proficient in the use of SmartPlant Instrumentation for valve datasheet preparation; experience with AVEVA Engineering is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to translate functional safety requirements into valve design specifications.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to technical challenges.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for vendor audits, site inspections, and commissioning support.
- Team-oriented mindset with the ability to coach and transfer knowledge to less experienced engineers.
- Safety-conscious attitude and sensitivity to regulatory and classification requirements when specifying valve equipment.
